Gig Diary

December 17th, 2007 by Patrick

9-4-10
Last Drags, PDX Saturday Market,
This was a cool gig, right by the riverside in Portland, muggy day and lots of folks out. Other than a sub par PA it was a good gig and would definitely like to come back. Sold some CD’s and had an attentive audience.

8-28-10 Last Drags, Eugene Celebration
Well, its been years since I played the Celebration and the last time I played I had a cold and guess what? This week I got a heinous cold! Arrrgh! We made it through and the set was good! Good energy but my voice was really raspy and quit by the last song….always a pleasure to have a crew and sound person who care, thanks Tim “Hippie” and Carbomb! You guys rock

8-13-10
Acoustic Show, Patrick and Russ Wilbanks, Cornucopia
This was fun because it’s been a while since I have done one of these…Russ was kind enough to fill in since Dave couldn’t make it and it sounded great! I like playing Cornucopia, nice people

8-8-10
The Nexxt Step ReArts Fair
This one is the second year in a row we have done it and it’s always fun! Fully Electric set

8-7-10
The Last Drags, Whitaker Block Party, Territorial Stage
First gig with Dave Johnson, energy was good, good crowd and lots of good feedback! Hope we can play this one again!

7-23-10
The Last Drags, The Granary Pizza Co., Eugene
What was the old Jo Fed’s has taken on a face lift and a bit of a different presentation, new management ect. It’s a classic spot so it’s good to see Josh, Leslie, Jason and crew trying to keep it alive. We had a good gig for the most part we are starting to gel more and more and I like where the muse is taking us. I find our repertoire challenging vocally and it pushes me to the point of being hoarse sometimes…I get tired and then I don’t breathe right and I get sloppy.

The Last Dragz w/ Special guest, Al Toribio, Stagger and Sway and The Winebirds, The White Eagle PDX
We love the WHite Eagle, such a cool bar! Had a fun gig here…Sooo fun to finally get to play with Al…he tore it up and other than the fact that I had bronchitis and was struggling vocally, we had a great show

The Last Drags w/Al Toribio, White Eagle, PDX 6-28-10< 6-18-10
The Last Drags/ 18 Switchbacks, Luckey's, Eugene
This was a strong gig playing wise but even after heavily promoting we didn't get hardly anyone out...The Eug is very frustrating that way...felt bad for 18 Switchbacks, I think they're used to a much more vital music scene in Boulder than the Eug....

6-11-10
The Last Dragz, East Burn Grill, PDX
Our first venture to Portland...good first set, had a decent crowd but everyone cleared out by 2nd set, we had to really play restrained as it was a full on dinner crowd. Tiniest stage we have played on, that was interesting...
Bartenders and staff were very nice

6-4-10
The Last Drags w/ Against the Green, The Wandering Goat
This was a fun gig, there were some folks listening and I love Against the Green, they sounded wonderful...
Joel is getting more and more comfortable and we are congealing quite nicely. We have a nice run of shows this summer so it will get us into a well oiled machine when all is said and done

5-28-10
The Last Drags, Cornucopia, Eugene
Other than Mike and Patrick being sick and it being a bit quiet, this was a good gig....we enjoyed playing here and definitely want to come back.....we were concerned we would be too loud but we managed to keep the volume within reason.

5-22-10
Drags/ Stagger and Sway, Muse Lounge, Eugene
This was a fun show in that it was our first out with our new drummer, Joel Albrecht. Sounded great!
He's a hard hitter, much more of a rock drummer than Charlie. Sound was good, we were received well
Tough getting folks into the Muse though...wonder if the location has anything to do with that?

1-30-10
Drags, Stagger, Sweater Club-Luckey's
We played 2nd and were a bit burnt by the time we played but it was rocking and having Shipe with us is always fun!
Wish I had recorded that one but was feeling a bit worn out from pulling double duty gigs.

1-30-10
Drags- Haiti Benefit, Vet's Club
This was a very worthy cause and we were happy to do it. That being said I was a little concerned with the equip sitch at first but Perry the Soundman and Autumn the Organizer, got it all together. The energy of the show was good albeit lightly attended.
Sound on stage was a bit off and we had to sort of hammer our way through it.
Overall, not bad

1-8-10
Dragz/ Shipe at The Wandering Goat-
What a great gig! We always enjoy playing The Goat! Shipe did a very good solo set and then joined us for our set....good crowd and everyone played well. Hotter than blazes in there but we always have fun.

12-18-09
The Dragz CD Release Party at Sam Bond's with Ehren Ebbage and The Stagger and Sway! Our CD release was great! The place was packed. We had a very attentive audience and we had a great gig. Shipe was going to be on this one but he was sick unfortunatey so Ebbage filled in. After a good write up in the Register Guard and The Eugene Weekly we had a great audience! A blast was had by all!
A++
11-28-09
The Dragz with Hinder Bison at Luckey's in Eugene...this is becoming a regular gig and line up. We like these guys and they're a great band...swirling, pyschedelic country and rock!
We kind of expected this to be a really beat night, right after Thanksgiving and all but it was pretty decent...we played well and enjoyed ourselves. We have been working in "Any Major Dude" by Steely Dan and having fun with that
A- for this one
11-6-09
The Dragz with our new member John Shipe at The Wandering Goat! We had a blast playing with Shipe....Shipe being Shipe is very self deprecating about where he is at with the material but he sounded great and upped the anty quite a bit. We sounded more like a rock band, blasting through some Neil Young and some of our jazzier numbers. People danced, the room was hot and sweaty! Great gig, A+ for this one
10-10-09 Every once and while you have to play a tough gig...it's bound to happen...we had one at The Black Forest, the other night. Everyone at the Black Forest was cool and no problems there but it was a really dead night and through our whole set we had a guy heckling us. He was just kind of sad, pathetic and drunk....He talked at us through the whole set saying things like "hey! You should try some of my lyrics that I have been writing." Oh thanks buddy, the ones on the Keeno pad that you are working on?! Good lord. I thought Jerry Groove was going to jump off the stage a couple times... he refrained and we made it through it but it was a tough one. Long, Tall and Ugly were cool, maybe we can play with them in a different environment next time...? C+ for this one.
9-18-09 The Dragz opening for Kinder Bison @ Luckey's, Eugene....this was a strong gig. we played well and the sound onstage was very good (thanks Moe) and thought the energy was good. Very few folks showed up for this show but towards the end of our set some more folks were coming in. I would give this an A-
9-10-09 The Last Drags @ The Wandering Goat...this was our 3rd gig with Charlie and Mike and it was pretty quiet....although are friends pulled through and showed up midway through 1st set! Thanks NWB! Enjoyed playing The Goat but personally played like shit...we are introducing some new material and working out the kinks....felt like a glorified practice and um, er...like we are paying some dues.... C+
8-20-09 The Last Drags and the Stagger and Sway at Cozmic Pizza (Mike Last's band) ahh yes, a quiet night in 'ol Bluegene....not too many folks made it out for this one but it was still fun. Second gig with Charlie Davis on drums and Mike Gelardi on Keys....we are starting to gell more and more and overall the playing was good...tempos getting more solid and feeling more in the groove. Enjoyed Stagger very much, Mike's voice really reminds me of Death Cab for Cutie, alot! B+
8-16-09 The Last Drags at The Crescent Village Recycled Arts Fair, this was a fun block party gig, First gig with Charlie and Mike....felt very comfortable and the energy was good. Very windy day but fun to play outside! Had one technical malfunction when my guit cut out on "Delusion" Overall, a strong performance A-
The Last Drags at Jo Fed's Sept 10th, 2009....John Shipe double bill and Shipe sitting in on lapsteel....it's been great getting to connect with Shipe this way, hope to do more of it! live music in Eugene on a weds night can be a bit tough but we had a few rowdies (mostly good friends, ain't nothin wrong with that! Thanks guys!) We played well for the most part and Shipes lapsteel add's a real nice texture to things....a bit of a trainwreck on Say you miss me but it's a chordy number....overall a good show and would have to give this a B+

Patrick’s CD release, the Last Drags and John Shipe, Cozmic Pizza in Eugene, Aug 28th 2008
what a grreaat night! Ebbage ran sound, it had a big sound and Shipe sat in on lapsteel, sounded fantastic! I was really pleased with the turnout and the overall vibe….got a shot to play my favorite Shipe tune “Waiting on you again a.k.a Half-dressed”
Earlier in the day we did a spot on KLCC 89.7 on their Fresh tracks program with Michael Canning and that seemed to bring some peeps as well. Thanks Michael!
Overall, great show, thanks everybody for coming out!

Chuckbarrymanilow w/ James Stasser and Tyler Fortier, Luckey’s 5-4-07
Showed up and were told we were playing first but typical Luckey’s gig, we ended up playing 3rd…ah yes! Kind of sick of that shit…Anyways, played well and fun but needless to say its tough to keep the enthusiasm going at 12am start time…

3-4-07, The Beanery, Corvallis, Or
This was an acoustic show with Bryan Guerrena and Spleeotch…Coffee house and actually some folks were listening, sold some cd’s and the sound was good, Rich recently bought a sub that we have been enjoying…gig is from 8-10 there, coffee, bran muffins and pickin and a grinnin, I give it a high B, a bouncy B+

REEOTCH AND TRICKY P FEATURING JERRY GROOVE TO PLAY ACOUSTICEXPLORATIONS AT LUNA

Reeotch (Rich Sellars) and Tricky P (Patrick Kavaney) are entertainers of a rare breed, self defined as an acoustic/percussion duo with a strong base in vocal harmony and musical detail.

Between the two of them they have over three decades of musical experience.

Reeotch is definitely a musical chameleon about town and most recently folks would recognize him from Satin Love Orchestra, The Shelly James Musicbox, and The Floydian Slips.

After hours of KISS albums and begging his mom for drum lessons,
Reeotch began playing drums at the ripe old age of 8 years.

In high school, he began his professional career with various
rock bands and jazz quartet/quintets. At the same time, volunteering at
grade schools, teaching privately, and playing some recording
sessions.

In college, besides music classes, he played percussion in multiple
theatric presentations, began playing with the variety band NRG (off and
on over the next ten years) and continued doing session work (one album he
played on went #1 in Fiji…) Beyond that, you would know Reeotch from Dr.
Fred and the Love Surgeons, Isor Wallobee, John Shipe Band, and now
Reeotch and Tricky P (re/tp). Rich is influenced by everything he plays
but has always leaned towards rock, metal, jazz, fusion/world beat.

Tricky P has been playing guitar and writing songs since he was 17. He
first met Reeotch in 1993 and played with him in the hugely influential
and seminal funk mothership, Dr. Fred and the Love Surgeons. Tricky has
played in 10 different bands in 4 different states (of the union and
mind). Tricky P has been involved with about every possible genre of
music; everything from acid jazz, funk, jazz, rock, acoustic
singer/songwriter, and most recently avant-garde polka. He graduated from
the U of O School of Music with a BS degree, yeah you heard me right! He
grew up in New York but moved here in 1993 and his favorite color is
Anaranjado.
